Snow Canyon Hosts Tourney of Big-Name HS Teams

Friday and Saturday Snow Canyon HS hosts five other highly-regarded HS teams in a tournament in St. George, Utah.
The defending Utah single-school champion, Snow Canyon already defeated defending Arizona champion Red Mountain 50-19 in late January and will look to get a repeat performance
Also in town for the tournament will be defending Hawaii champion Kahuku, which just recently survived a very difficult game with St. Francis, but looks to be the favorite to win in Hawaii again. Kahuku is led by non-stop tackler Ted Kanese, with halfback combo Kawika Macy and Ocean Tuia playing well together.
Utah-based teams United (defending HS club champion) and Olympus join ORCAs from California to round out the group.
The teams will play shortened games of 25-minute halves, with extended subs benches. The out-of-town players are being billeted at the homes of Snow Canyon kids, or at the local National Guard Armory.
The teams will play one game on Friday, then have a social Friday night, and then play two games on Saturday. Four of the teams also are bringing 9th/10th-Grade teams. Teams that stay Saturday night will have a games night/movie night at Snow Canyon HS.
Underscoring the event is a little bit of bragging rights. Kahuku Coach Seamus Fitzgerald, Red Mountain Coach OJ Hawea, Snow Canyon Coach Michael Puriri, and United Coach Colin Puriri all know each other from a long way back when they were in New Zealand. This will be a battle-within-a-battle.
