2016 Star-Advertiser All-State football team

The 2016 Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State football teams were released in Sunday’s newspaper. Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the offensive player of the year and Kahuku’s Kekaula Kaniho is the defensive player of the year. Hawaii’s all-time winningest head coach, Cal Lee,
added a coach of the year honor to his lengthy resume.
Here is the all-state feature that ran in Sunday’s newspaper. You can find a list of every first-team all-state selection from both newspapers going back to 1972 at the bottom.
Below are some notes compiled by the Star-Advertiser’s Jerry Campany.
>> Aiea has not had a first teamer since Chucky Kaahanui in 2010
>> Castle has not had a first teamer since Shaydon Kehano in 2009
>> Damien has not had a first teamer since Kama Bailey in 2007
>> Kalaheo has not had a first teamer since Bruce Andrews in 2007
>> Pearl City has not had a first teamer since Frank Baumholtz in 1990
>> Radford has not had a first teamer since 2005 with Ramsey Feagai and Jamie Whitworth
>> Roosevelt has not had a first teamer since Chad Kapanui in 1999
>> Waipahu has not had a first teamer since Troy Matautia in 2008
>> Waialua has not had a first teamer since Micah Hatchie in 2009
>> Kaleihaila Tolentino-Perry is Hilo’s first all-state first teamer since fellow kicker Eddie Ruhland in 2000 for the Star-Bulletin. The Vikings have not had a position player named first-team all state since linebacker Tod Bello in 1992 for the Honolulu Advertiser
>> ‘Iolani has been shut out of the first team in three of the last four years. Keoni-Kordell Makekau was a first teamer last year
>> Kahuku has had a first teamer every year since 2013.
>> Christian Mejia is Kailua’s first two-time first teamer since Kainoa Lacount in 2003-2004. Before Mejia came along last year, the Surfriders had not had a first teamer since Chauncey and Courtney Makainai in 2008.
>> Kamehameha has had a first teamer every year since 2012. Adam Stack is the first Warriors special teamer to be first team since punter Drew Ueno in 2005 by the Star-Bulletin
>> Morris Unutoa is Kapaa’s first ever all state first teamer
>> Kapolei has had a first teamer every year since 2012 and its four selections this year is a program best tied with 2014.
>> Charles Moku Watson is Leilehua’s first all-state first teamer since 2011.
>> Mililani has had a first teamer every year since 2002!
>> Ryan Ramones is Monalua’s first all-state first teamer since fellow receiver Chad Aragon in 2013
>> Puahou has had a first teamer every year since 2010
>> Saint Louis has had a first teamer every year since 1982. This is the first time they have had muliple linebackers since 2001 with Taualai Fonoti and Timo Paepule. The Crusaders have had an offensive lineman on the first team every year since 2009.
>> Rico Rosario and ONesimus Lutu-Clarke are Waianae’s first all-state first teamers since Kennedy Tulimasealii in 2012 and this is the first time since 2006 the Seariders have mulitple first teamers (Preston Ayala, George Kauwalu and Travis Nua. This is the first time since 1997 they have had two offensive players named to the first team.
>> Rico Rosario is the first Waianae running back to be named first team since West Keliikipi in 1997. Lutu-Clarke is Waianae’s first offensive lineman to be first team since Travis Nua in 2006.
>> Farrington running backs who were first team all-state: Challen Faamatau, Sanele Lavatai, Abraham Silva, Tyler Taumua, Harry Tuimaseve, Apelu Sooalu, Matt Bell, Josh White, Talbot Kahakai, Randall Okimoto, Ului Haleua, Sim Tiatia, John Vallejo, Fia Iosia, Willy Galoia
