Sources: Tata out, Freitas in at Kahuku
Vavae Tata is out after two years as the Kakuku football head coach. Jamm Aquino / Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Kahuku football head coach Vavae Tata is no longer the head coach of the Kahuku football team, according to multiple sources close to the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity late Thursday night.
The sources said Tata was released by the Kahuku administration after his two-year stint with the Red Raiders that yielded a Division I state championship and an appearance in the first Open Division state final.
Former NFL, University of Arizona and Kamehameha football player Makoa Freitas has been brought in as the Kahuku interim head coach. Freitas was an offensive line coach for the Red Raiders under Tata.
Hawaii Prep World has heard unverified reports often that Tata has rarely been on campus since a 30-14 loss to Saint Louis in the Open title game. Apparently, according to multiple sources, Tata did not go into the locker room at halftime of that game for adjustments, did not speak with the team after the game and has been on many trips to the mainland and not concentrating on his duties as the head coach.
Calls to Tata and the Kahuku administration for comment have not been returned.
