Defending Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I champion Moanalua opened the season on the road against Kahuku and came away with a 25-8, 25-19 win Monday night at Thomas G.S. Walker Gymnasium.

Na Menehune (1-0), winners of the last five league titles, used a veteran lineup in the opening game before allowing some of their younger players to get some playing time in the second stanza.

Moanalua was near flawless in set one, but had nine hitting errors in the second frame to make for a tighter game two.

"With the first group we have, they kind of showed their experience while the younger second team has somethings to learn from the senior group," said Moanalua coach Alan Cabanting. "With all the new faces and new guys and new positions, we're getting ready. Overall (we) did well."

Zack Miyamoto led Moanalua in the straight set victory with eight kills — seven of which came in the second set — five digs, five assists and an ace.

Kalai Leopoldo added five kills, Caleb Casinas and Kainoa Ferguson each chipped in two more and Duncan Clark and Cole Fukumitsu had a kill apiece.

Na Menehune as a whole was particularly efficient from the service line, recording 11 aces before the night was over.

Keaunui Ah You led the Red Raiders (0-1) in the loss with six kills.
