The Polynesian Bowl kicks off on Saturday. On Team Mauka, Virginia signee, Kahuku (Hi.) defensive end Samson Reed is looking forward to taking the field at Aloha Stadium.
“It’s amazing,” said Reed. “To be able to play in this game. So many before have gone on to do amazing things in college.
“It’s a really fun opportunity to play against the top players.”
Reed is no stranger to Aloha Stadium, where he and his Kahuku teammates have played in the state championship game the last three years.
The three-star defensive lineman is excited to cap his high school career there before aiming his sights on Charlottesville, Va.
“I’m excited to contribute my skills and myself to the UVA program and the team.”
A versatile defensive lineman, Reed will come in as a defensive tackle, although defensive end remains an option.
“They want me to come in at defensive tackle. UVA wants to try to get me to at least the 290s. I’m currently 265, so I need to do a little bit of eating and lifting.”
Leading the charge in Reed’s recruitment was UVA assistant Vic So’oto, who will be his position coach when he arrives at Virginia in June.
“He’s a great guy, really passionate about the game,” said Reed of So’oto.
The 2018 Polynesian Bowl kicks off Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11 p.m. ET/6 p.m. HST on ESPN3.
