Kahuku, Farrington to decide OIA East champion

The girls volleyball regular season in the OIA East has only one game remaining before the playoffs — and it’s a big one.

In a game rescheduled because of weather, Kahuku will host Farrington on Thursday night with the top seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs on the line.

Kahuku swept Kaiser while Farrington swept Kalani on Wednesday night to remain tied in the standings at 9-1 overall.

Both teams’ only loss was against Moanalua, which closed its regular season at 9-2. That’s a big deal for playoff seeding. The loser of Thursday’s match would fall into a second-place tie with Na Menehune, and because of the head-to-head loss, would be the No. 3 seed in the OIA Division I playoffs, meaning no bye and a first-round match against the West’s No. 6 seed.

Na Menehune has clinched the second seed and a playoff bye.

Castle (8-3) is the No. 4 seed, Roosevelt (7-4) is the No. 5 seed and Kalaheo (6-5) is the No. 6 seed out of the East.

Kaiser (5-6) is the No. 1 seed in Division II out of the OIA East, followed by Kailua (4-7), which won the tiebreaker over McKinley (4-7) thanks to Monday’s three-set win over the Tigers. McKinley had a chance at the No. 2 seed, but lost 25-23, 24-26, 20-18 to Castle tonight in a thriller.

EDIT 10 a.m. Oct. 4 The proper seeding out of the OIA West has been updated to reflect Nanakuli in Division I and Leilehua in Division II.

Mililani and Kapolei are the top two seeds out of the West and Waianae is the No. 3 seed, followed by Nanakuli, Radford and Aiea, which is the No. 6 seed due to its head-to-head tiebreaker over Campbell.

The Mules are the top seed in Division II. Waialua and Pearl City will play for the second and third seeds tonight.

The OIA playoffs begin next week.
