Parting thoughts - Polynesian Bowl 2018

My son and I were privileged to be able to get on the Aloha Stadium turf last Saturday for the Polynesian Bowl. In it's second year the Polynesian Bowl is becoming one of the premier post high school all-star games in the country. Sponsored by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame the game showcases high school seniors of Polynesian ancestry from around the country as well as some selected players not of Polynesian ancestry. As the host of this all-star game the State of Hawai

Saint Louis’ title victory over Kahuku: crazy good

The appetizer was so very good that it seemed quite possible that the main course would turn out to be bland. But instead, the third game of Saturday’s tripleheader at Aloha Stadium was a crazy-good show-stopper for football connoisseurs and an incredible capper for Hawaii’s football-hungry fans, who got an extra-sweet treat in the first game of the day — Lahainaluna’s 75-69 seven-overtime win over Konawaena in the D-II championship game. With a kickoff at 9:58 p.m. Saturday,

GAME NIGHT: No. 1 Saint Louis/No. 2 Kahuku

For the third year in a row, the high school football season will end with a clash between the two most storied prep football programs in the state. No. 1 Saint Louis (9-0) and its 14 Prep Bowls and four state titles faces No. 2 Kahuku (11-1), which has won eight state championships. Kahuku dominated the Crusaders, 39-14, in 2015 before Saint Louis came back to win last season’s showdown, 30-14. Looks like we will start at 9:55 p.m. Saint Louis 31, Kahuku 28 OFFICIAL BOX SCOR

Kahuku football coach Makoa Freitas is busy in the morning, busy in the afternoon, busy at night. He does all he can, and that means time is precious. Two days before the showdown — the rematch — with defending state champion Saint Louis, he chatted with Hawaii Prep World about being a first-year head coach facing veteran Cal Lee and Sai

    Kahuku pregame posture: cool confidence

Kahuku's seniors said goodbye to their home field on Friday night. Dennis Oda / Star-Advertiser Things were pretty relaxed before Kahuku football practice Friday afternoon. But don’t let that lack of intense emotion fool you. Behind the smiles and easy talk from the leaders on the field is an inner mechanism just waiting to go off into a controlled rage on cue tomorrow. Perhaps it will be timed to set off when the sea of red fans at Aloha Stadium do their first tomahawk chop

STEVEN ERLER / SPECIAL TO THE STAR-ADVERTISER The deeper in the season they go, the Kahuku Red Raiders are stretching, growing, expanding into a new creation.
