Kahuku goes from 0-to-60 in OIA victory

After his team won by 42 points last night, you'd think Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai would be happy.

He wasn't.

"We made a lot of mistakes tonight. A lot of mistakes," Livai said, after his Red Raiders rallied to run away from No. 10 Kaimuki, 60-18, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Division football game at Kahuku.

Part of the reason for Livai's dismay was because his team trailed the Bulldogs, 10-0, early. But the defending OIA champs recovered in style, with a 47-point second quarter.

Kaimuki's Justin Faimealelei began the game with a one-man show, stunning the crowd by shaking off three defenders and returning the opening kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown.

Faimealelei added the extra point, then intercepted an Inoke Funaki pass near midfield, returning it deep into Red Raider territory. When Kaimuki's drive stalled, Faimealelei's 21-yard field goal gave the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead.

But quarterback Funaki brought Kahuku right back.

Running the option to perfection, Funaki sucked in the Kaimuki defense with a beautiful fake to his fullback, then sprinted around the corner for a 59-yard touchdown. The comeback was on.

Kahuku, dominating the line of scrimmage on offense and especially defense, scored the next 47 points, including two touchdown throws by Funaki to take a 54-10 halftime lead.

"We weren't too worried about being down early," Livai said. "They broke a play on our special teams and that can happen any time.

"They're a real good team and they came out and capitalized on our mistakes. I have a lot of respect for them."

Kaimuki coach Ron Oyama said the close first quarter will give his team some confidence. "We showed our boys that we can play up here in the Red Division. Kahuku is tough, very tough. They have speed and speed kills."

Oyama said that Faimealelei, who later added a two-point conversion after touchdown run, has a great future in the game. "He's one of our leaders and he's definitely a Division I prospect at either receiver or linebacker."
