Kahuku football, volleyball to invade Vegas

Las Vegas – affectionately called the Ninth Island by Hawaii residents – will be a sea of red this weekend.

Defending state football champion Kahuku will play at two-time USA Today national champion Bishop Gorman Saturday.

Joining the football players will be Kahuku's girls' volleyball team, which will be playing the Durango Classic. The prestigious tournament runs Friday through Saturday. Hawaii Baptist and Kamehameha also will be in this tournament. A number of nationally-ranked teams play in the tournament.

Back to football, Fertitta Field at Bishop Gorman lists a capacity of 3,600, but can hold up to 5,000 when including standing-room only areas, a school spokeswoman said.

Adult tickets for the game are sold out. Gates open at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. kickoff.

The Gaels enter the game 3-0 with wins against then-No. 5-ranked Cedar Hill (Texas), 44-14; Cocoa (Fla.), 46-10, at Fertitta; and rallied to beat then-No. 7 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), 35-20, last Friday in Long Beach, Calif. Kahuku, ranked No. 17, will be the Gaels' third nationally-ranked opponent this season. All rankings are from USA Today.
