Samson Reed goes in-depth on UVa commitment

Kahuku (Hi.) defensive lineman Samson Reed capped a big, three-commitment night for the Wahoos on Monday.

Reed chose UVa over offers from BYU, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, San Diego State, and Washington State.

He spoke with Wahoos247 about his decision to commit to Virginia.

“I really loved what the program stood for and how Coach Mendenhall and his staff ran it,” said Reed.

UVa defensive line coach Vic So’oto played a major role in the Hawaii-native’s decision.

“He played a major role in my decision. He has been consistent in recruiting me and I could hear how much he wanted me in his voice when we spoke.

“I really love his energy and coaching style. I know he'll develop and bring the best out of me, both as a player and a man.”

Reed, who visited Charlottesville earlier this month, was recruited by UVa as a nose tackle. Following that visit, his role and his relationship with So’oto were clear.

“Coach So'oto said he wants me at nose guard. He said he likes his nose guards for their defense to be able to attack in get into the backfield. Almost like a hybrid defensive end/nose tackle where I can pass rush and penetrate instead of just plug up holes.

“I'd be what he calls a Silverback Gorilla.”

Reed’s father, Tanoai, is a stunt man and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s body double, a role he’s held for more than a decade.

Johnson, who is Tanoai’s cousin, owns a farm just outside of Charlottesville.

Reed hasn’t talked to Johnson about his college decision, but his father did.

“No, but my dad told him at work this morning and he was very excited about my decision.”

We asked Reed about playing nose tackle, considering he weighs 255 now. With his father’s physique, it’s easy to see Reed adding more weight.

“I'm 255 now, so I'd like to put on another 15-20 pounds of quality size. I know the strength coach, Frank Wintrich will get me to where they want me.

“I think strength is more important than weight. 280 pounds of lean muscle is better than 300 pounds with 20 extra pounds of fat.”

After a pause, Reed added to his line of thought.

“I could wear a 45-pound weight vest when I play but that won't make me better,” said a laughing Reed.

Well played.
