GAME NIGHT 11/4: Mililani/Kahuku
No matter who wins tonight at Aloha Stadium, a streak of 10 straight OIA titles won by either the Red Raiders or Trojans will be intact.
This is the first meeting since Kahuku beat Mililani, 20-7, to win the OIA title, a year after the Trojans beat the Red Raiders in the OIA final by the same score.
Keep in mind the loser in this game has to turn around and play No. 1 Saint Louis in six days in the Open-Division I semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships.
Live updates will follow below.

Kahuku 35, Mililani 31, Final
10:58: Gabriel’s desperation throw is intercepted past mid-field, double coverage. Kahuku ball at the 18, Mililani no time outs. Game should be over. Kahuku in victory formation, kneel, and it’s over. Kahuku three-peats as OIA champion. This stadium is literally rocking.
10:57: Here comes LB Miki Ah You from the blind side (right) and Gabriel never sees him. Sack. Ball back to the Mililani 18, fourth-and-22. Time out, Trojans, :42.
10:56: More heat on Gabriel, but he hits Cy Kuboyama-Hayashi in the facemask. Dropped, :50 left.
10:55: Gabriel high pass down the season is missed by his receiver. Ball was there, tight coverage. Second down, :56.

Kahuku 35, Mililani 31, 1:34, 4Q
10:48: Finally, after a 5-minute delay, the PAT kick is good.
10:44: Blitz coming and Maiava unloads a high spiral to the right corner, where Kaonohi Kaniho hauls it in for a 28-yard TD. Kahuku leads. PAT… play is halted because someone from the Kahuku bleachers threw something on the field again. White hat is talking with Freitas on the field, officials will convene again. A small, but loud contingent on the Kahuku side has chanted, “Ref you suck!” occasionally tonight. None of this looks good for Big Red.
10:43: Huge pass play from Maiava to Peter John Mataira to the Mililani 33. Clock ticking after Maiava keeps for 5 yards, 1:53 left. WOO.
10:39: Maiava being patient, looking for short passes, but Mililani is all over his receivers after the catch. Now it’s holding on Kahuku, ball moves all the way back to the Kahuku 21. That’s 20-plus penalty yards, first-and-29 with 3:36 to go. Mililani injury time out.
Mililani 31, Kahuku 28, 4:44, 4Q
10:37: Fonoimoana-Vaomu takes the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Mililani 2 but a blindside block pits the Red Raiders back to their own 30 with 4:44 left.
10:34: MILILANI BACK IN THE LEAD. Gabriel, facing heavy pressure, finds Kilifi Malepeai for an 11-yard score. Santiago’s PAT is good and Mililani leads 31-28 with 5:05 left in the game.
10:32: Mililani now on the Kahuku 8 with a fresh set of downs.
10:28: The Trojans are in business after a screen pass takes them to the Kahuku 33.
10:26: Mililani takes over from its own 20 after a touchback.
10:24: WOW. Alex Fonoimoana-Vaomu just SNATCHES a ball away and takes it TO THE HOUSE. KAHUKU HAS ITS FIRST LEAD OF THE GAME. Heffernan’s PAT is good and the Red Raiders lead 28-24 with 7:31 to go.
10:22: Kahuku’s offense goes three-and-out. Mililani take over from its own 36 with 7:55 left. With the way this thing is going, a touchdown here for the Trojans would really go a long way towards a potential victory.
10:16: Fourth down for Mililani. Decision time. Santiago goes out there for a 32-yard field goal attempt and it’s GOOD. The Trojans take the lead back and are up 24-21 with 9:30 to go.
10:13: Trojans now at the Kahuku 10 after a run by Gabriel.
10:10: Mililani can’t convert a first down, so they’ll punt. Kahuku touches the punt as it bounces and IT’S MILILANI BALL AT THE KAHUKU 27, 11:07 left in the game.
10:05: That’s the end of the third quarter here at Aloha Stadium, with things knotted up at 21. When the fourth quarter starts, it’ll be second-and-7 for Mililani from its own 35.

9:57: The punt is BLOCKED. Kahuku takes over at the Mililani 41 with 3:23 left in the third.
9:54: So after all the dust has settled, Mililani will re-play fourth down from its own 30. Kahuku fans are chanting “kick him out,” referring to York. The Trojans call timeout. This is wild.
9:53: Tons of confusion here as Gabriel seems to have thrown a touchdown pass to Cy Kuboyama-Hayashi, but it’s determined that he was an ineligible receiver downfield. Mililani head coach Rod York is LIVID, and he gets flagged.
9:51: Three-and-out for Miliani, which brings another punt. Kahuku had really adjusted to the Trojan attack thus far in the second half.
9:49: FUMBLE. Mililani recovers at midfield. What a seesaw battle we have here.
9:47: Momentum seems to have swung towards Kahuku’s side after a three-and-out by Mililani’s offense. The Red Raiders will take over from their own 42 with 4:54 left in the third.
9:43: BRAND NEW BALLGAME. Lefau takes a handoff from the 1 and dives in the end zone, and Heffernan’s PAT is good. We’re tied at 21. What a drive by Kahuku, they seem to have just worn down Mililani on that one.
9:32: The second half is underway and Kahuku starts from its own 20 after a touchback.
9:25: This is not a defense-oriented game so far. Mililani has racked up 274 yards of total offense while Kahuku has 203. Gabriel is 14-for-20 while Maiava is 7-for-13, so some good quarterback play so far.
9:09: Gabriel takes a knee and Mililani leads 21-14 heading into halftime. WHAT A GAME we have on our hands. Kahuku receives to start the second half.
9:07: TOUCHDOWN RED RAIDERS. Maiava connects with Lefau for a 25-yard passing score with just nine seconds left in the half. Heffernan’s PAT is good and the Mililani lead is cut to 21-14.
9:04: Three-and-out for Mililani. Kahuku takes over at the Trojans’ 35 after a punt takes a Kahuku bounce.
9:00: By the way, Latu has a very powerful leg. Impressive for a high school punter.
8:59: Three-and-out for Kahuku. After another booming punt from Sekope Latu, the Trojans take over with exactly two minutes left on the clock. Two-minute drill time for Gabriel and the Trojans, who start from their own 20.
8:56: CRUCIAL stop for Kahuku’s defense, who stuff Tuivaiave-Olomua at the one-yard line on fourth-and-goal. Red Raiders take over with 3:35 left in the first half.
8:51: AGAIN, WOW. Kahuku fumbles the kickoff and Mililani takes over at the Red Raiders’ 27 with 5:16 left in the half.
8:49: WHOA. JUST WHOA. Gabriel tosses a 49-yard jump ball to Ryan Chang, who snatches it from his man and eases his way to pay dirt. Santiago’s PAT is good and the Trojans lead 21-7 with 5:23 left in the first half.

8:34: Kahuku decides to punt when faced with fourth-and-1 at the Mililani 42, but then they call timeout with 8:12 left in the half. Perhaps they’re drawing up a fourth down play.
8:30: Mililani’s defense has done its job so far but looks gassed. Maiava completes a long pass to Duke Heffernan at the Mililani 49. The Trojans call their last timeout of the half, which comes with 9:17 remaining in the second quarter.
8:28: Kaniho fumbles the ensuing kickoff but recovers it on his own 13, 9:38 left in the half.
8:26: TOUCHDOWN MILILANI. The Trojans drive right down the field again and are helped out by a facemask call. Jalen Tuivaiave-Olomua, a recent 2018 Polynesian Bowl selection, takes it to the outside for a 5-yard score, making it look easy. Santiago’s PAT is good and the Trojans lead 14-0 with 9:48 left in the first half.
8:20: Maiava’s third down pass is incomplete and the Trojans will take over from their own 42 after a nice punt with 11:42 left in the second quarter.
8:18: We’ve reached the end of the first quarter in a game that’s lived up to the hype so far. Mililani leads 7-0 after one period. Kahuku faces third-and-5 from its own 19 to start the second quarter.
8:15: KAHUKU BALL. Kaonohi Kaniho picks off Gabriel with a nose for the ball that is similar to that of his older brother, Kekaula, who was the Honolulu Star-Advertiser defensive player of the year last season. Red Raiders take over from their own 14 with 1:06 to go in the first.
8:13: The Trojans are driving again with a fresh set of downs at the Kahuku 37, 1:42 left in the first.
8:10: Back to Lefau’s play. Definitely a play that could have benefitted from some booth review, but at the same time a great stop nonetheless by the Trojans. No true way to know now, but it was close.
8:09: Toalei Lefau is stopped JUST short of the end zone, and the Trojans will take over from the shadow of their own goal line with 4:34 left in the first.
8:08: Kahuku calls a timeout on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, 4:41 left in the first quarter. Gotta think they’re gonna try to power their way in here.
8:03: Enoch Nawahine with a couple of nice runs for Kahuku, and now the Red Raiders have a fresh set of downs at the Mililani 17.
8:01: Maiava has been making plays early, causing the Trojans to burn their second timeout of the half with just 7:29 to go in the first quarter.
8:00: Maiava is putting his arm strength on display, zipping a couple balls to his receivers where only his guys can catch them. Kahuku is in Trojan territory for the first time, and they’re now at the Mililani 29 with 7:34 left in the first.
7:55: Mililani goes for it on fourth-and-15 from the Kahuku 35 but to no avail. Red Raiders get the ball back with 10:08 left in the first.
7:50: WOW. On Kahuku’s first offensive play from scrimmage, Sol-Jay Maiava gets sacked and fumbles. Mililani recovers at the Kahuku 30 with 11:01 left in the first. Mililani’s side of the stadium is ROCKING.
7:46: That was QUICK. Dillon Gabriel guides the Trojans down the field with surgical precision, and he caps off the opening drive with a 15-yard touchdown to a WIDE OPEN Josiah Sampaga. Damien Santiago‘s PAT is good and Mililani leads 7-0 with 11:21 to go in the first quarter.
7:43 p.m.: After an overtime finish to the previous game, Mililani will receive to start things off on a late start.
