ShaLi Niu Earns Second-Straight Atlantic 10 Weekly Award
FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason women's volleyball freshman ShaLi Niu has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, for the second-straight week, the conference announced on Monday. The Laie, Hawaii native averaged 4.17 kills per set and 4.83 digs per set over two matches this weekend. In Friday's sweep over Davidson, the opposite hitter tabbed nine kills, 14 digs and two blocks. On Saturday night, Niu erupted for a match-high 16 kills and 15 digs in Mason's sweep over VCU. The freshman supplied the game-winning kill, handing the Rams their first conference loss of the season. She also added two blocks in the upset. With Friday night's victory over Davidson, the Patriots clinched a spot to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time program history. The A-10 Championship will take place from Nov. 16-18 in Richmond, Va. at VCU's Siegel Center. Mason (10-12, 8-4 A-10) snapped VCU's 28-game winning streak over A-10 opponents on Saturday night. This marked Mason's first win over VCU since Oct. 4, 2015. The Patriots conclude regular season play on the road against Rhode Island on Nov. 9 (7 p.m.) and Fordham on Nov. 10 (3 p.m.).
